Freefly LR1 Laser Range Finder Upgrade: Real-Time Distance Sensing for the Astro LR1 Payload
The Freefly LR1 Laser Range Finder Upgrade is an add-on distance sensor module that extends the capability of the LR1 payload on the Freefly Astro drone. Built around the Lightware SF20/C sensor with a maximum range of 100 meters, it adds live distance readouts directly to the AMC ground station interface and embeds the distance value at the moment of capture into every photo’s metadata.
For mapping, inspection, and survey operators who need ground distance data alongside imagery, this upgrade delivers both in a single user-installable module that weighs just 45g installed.
Installation requires no specialized tools — the module mounts to the LR1 payload with 4 screws and plugs directly into the expansion port. The included counterweight maintains payload balance after installation. Note that the LR1 Laser Range Finder Upgrade requires the LR1 payload to already be installed on the Astro, and an additional app must be installed on the Astro to enable distance sensor functionality. If the Thermal Upgrade is also installed on the LR1, a different counterweight will be required.
